Turn-by-Turn Course Description

25k and 50k Runners:

Head out from the starting line located at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center (TOEC) by the pavilion near the boat dock. After heading south/west out onto Mountain Laurel Lane for about 0.5 miles, runners will turn right onto a privately marked TOEC trail to access the Red-blazed Catfish Trail.

Runners will turn right onto the Catfish Trail (Red) and continue straight on this trail. After approximately 2 miles, runners will turn slightly right to leave the Catfish Trail and cross over to the Moneyhole Mountain Trail (Yellow) using a 10 foot long unmarked link trail making sure to bear left at the end of the link trail. After approximately 0.5 miles, at the intersection of the Yellow Moneyhole Mountain Trail and the Green Moneyhole Mountain Access Trail, turn left to stay on the Yellow Moneyhole Mountain Trail. Runners will continue on the Yellow Moneyhole Mountain Trail for approximately 1.5 miles and then turn right onto the Red-blazed Catfish Trail and continue straight on this trail until it intersects with Dennytown Road. (Note: the Catfish trail actually crosses the Moneyhole Mountain trail north of the Green Moneyhole Mountain Access Trail twice. The right turn on Catfish after 1.5 miles is at the second crossing).

A road marshal will assist runners to cross Dennytown Road and access the Three Lakes Trail (Blue) on the north side of the Dennytown Parking lot. After descending a small hill on the Three Lakes Trail, runners will turn left onto the seasonal dirt Sunken Mine Road then shortly after turn right onto the Old Mine Railroad (Yellow). Runners will then turn left on Three Lakes Trail (Blue) and then turn right onto the Clear Lake Trail (Green) and stay right on Clear Lake when it turns to Blue through Durland Scout Reservation and bear left at the end of the trail as it approaches Sunken Mine Road. Runners turn left onto Sunken Mine Road/Candlewood Hill Trail (Red) and stay on Red when it turns right (at the Candlewood Hill trail head). Runners stay on the Candlewood Hill Trail as it climbs to the hill’s summit and then descends to Bells Hollow Road until it intersects with the road. Runners will turn right onto the unmarked access road back to Sunken Mine Road. At the top of the access road, runners turn left onto Sunken Mine Road. Upon reaching the point where the Three Lakes Trail (Blue) joins Sunken Mine Road:

  • **50k RUNNERS ONLY** turn right onto the Blue Three Lakes Trail and follow the turn-by-turn directions below for the 50k LOOP. Upon returning from the 50k LOOP, 50k runners follow the turn-by-turn directions below for 25k Runners (and 50k Runners rejoining from the 50k loop)
  • **25k RUNNERS” follow turn-by-turn directions below for 25k Runners (and 50k Runners rejoining from the 50k loop)

A road marshal will be placed to assist runners who will cross State Road Route 301. Runners will turn left onto the Perkins Trail (Yellow) and remain on public access easement through Glynwood Farms and back onto state property for 3 miles.

After crossing a stream, a driveway and climbing a steep hill in short succession, runners turn left onto the Perkins Access (Red), right onto Roundhill Bypass (Green) then left onto the Fahnestock Trail (Blue) to ascend Round Hill. After descending Round Hill, runners will stay straight onto School Mountain Road (White), turn left onto East Mountain Loop (Red) then again left back onto School Mountain Road (White).

Runners will turn right onto the Perkins Trail (yellow) and then left onto Fahnestock Trail (blue). Runners will bear right to stay on the Fahnestock Trail at the start of the Clove Creek Trail (White). Runners will turn right onto Charcoal Burners (Red) and head south. They will turn right onto the White Cabot Trail. They will turn left onto the Perkins Trail (Yellow) and then turn right onto Charcoal Burners (Red) to again cross Route 301. Runner will continue on Charcoal Burners (Red) bearing right as the trail becomes the Three Lakes Trail (Blue). The Three Lakes Trail (Blue) joins Sunken Mine Road and 50k runners should bear right here.

25k runners (and 50k Runners returning from the 50k LOOP) continue on the Three Lakes Trail as it co-aligns with Sunken Mine Road for short distance. Runners bear slightly left staying on the Blue trail as it departs from Sunken Mine Road heading south back to Dennytown Road. Runners cross Dennytown road and then bear right to access the Catfish Trail (red) (do not bear left onto the white-blazed Appalachian Trail). At the intersection with Moneyhole Mountain Trail (Yellow) runners continue straight on the Red Catfish Trail. Runners turn right onto an unmarked trail and left onto Mountain Laurel Lane at TOEC.
